Life Story for Robert Oaks

Robert  Oaks
OAKS – Robert, 80, Jerome, died Sept. 11, 2012, at VA Medical Center, Pittsburgh. Born Dec. 22, 1931, in Gray, son of Herman and Margaret (Hoover) Oaks. Preceded in death by parents; wife, the former Naomi M. Reckner, on Aug. 5, 2003; sisters, Joanne Matse and Betty Oaks; and brother, Terry Oaks. Survived by daughter, Darcy A. Oaks; and granddaughter, Lori A. Yoder, both of Jerome; brother, Jack, Cairnbrook; sister, Billie Sue Zapotosky, Central City; sisters-in-law, Euldean Shields, Hooversville; Donna, married to Warren “Bussie” Shaffer, Hooversville; Janice Lint, Boswell; Dorcas, married to James “Jessie” Garlesky, Hollsopple; Betty Oaks, Hollsopple; and Ethel Reckner, Holtwood; and brother-in-law, Albert Reckner, married to the former Ruth Rodeheaver, Jerome; also numerous nieces and nephews and special pet dog Roxy. He was a U.S. Army, 7th Calvary Regiment veteran of the Korean War, and a recipient of two Purple Hearts, Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star Medal, Korean Service Medal and three Bronze Stars, U.N. Service Medal and Korean Unit Citation. Retired employee of the former Bethlehem Steel Car Shop, Johnstown. Member of the former Jerome Lutheran Church; Korean Service Organization Post 1, Johnstown; Order of the Purple Heart; Seventh Calvary Association, First Calvary Division; Jerome Post 802 American Legion; Hooversville Post 7565 VFW; DAV; Jenner Rod & Gun Club; Jerome Sportsmen’s; and Jerome Nest 556 Polish Falcons. Bob also was an avid hunter and fisherman. Viewing will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 109 Church Road, Davidsville, where service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, the Rev. Larry C. Hoover, presiding. Interment, Maple Spring Cemetery, with military rites by Somerset County Honor Guard. Donations in Bob’s memory may be sent to the Jerome Volunteer Fire Department, P.O.
