Life Story for Karl M. Coughenour

Karl M.  Coughenour
COUGHENOUR – Karl M., 88, Hollsopple, R.D., went to join his wife of 67 years, Betty Jane (Sipe), in their heavenly home on April 8, 2014, at his home. Born Feb. 10, 1926, in Berlin, son of Jay and Viola (Miller) Coughenour. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Helen Coughenour and Barby Lou Webreck; and brothers-in-law, Louis C. Hersh and James Webreck. Survived by children, Harold J., married to Sue (Holsopple), and their children, Karla Coughenour and Krista, married to Lucas Shaffer; Ronald G., married to Brenda (Yoder), and their children, Ronald Coughenour Jr., married to Judy (Morgan), and Laurie, married to Thomas Grosik; Patti A., married to Frank E. Besyk, and their son, Brett E. Besyk, married to Jennifer (Bendik); and Terry L., and his children, Rachael, married to Michael Colon; and Hannah, Elisheba and Makayla; great-grandchildren, Samantha, Grant, Monica, Clay, Sage, Ryan, Jacob, Nicholas, Olivia, Julianna and Aubrey; brother, Donald J., married to Carol (Stiffler); and sister-in-law, Edna Hersh. A 1944 graduate of Conemaugh Township Area High School. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II as chief petty officer in the South Pacific. Longtime member of the former Jerome Lutheran Church and a member of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, Boswell, where he served as financial secretary. He was a leader of BSA, Troop 112, Jerome, for a number of years. He enjoyed farming and retired from Island Creek Coal Co., Kelso, in 1981, after working there for 33 years. Karl loved his Lord above all else, starting every morning with a cup of coffee and his Bible. He also had a deep love for his family and country and his goal in life was to make everyone smile. A very special thank you to Windber Hospice for their very compassionate care. Viewing will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 409 Main St., Boswell. Viewing also will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, Boswell, the Rev. Larry C. Hoover, presiding. Interment, Maple Spring Cemetery, Jerome, with military honors by Somerset County Honor Guard.
