FOREBACK – Louis F., 81, Jerome, died Jan. 23, 2016, at Memorial Medical Center. Born Feb. 20, 1934, in Johnstown, son of Lewis E. and Fern Ella Mae (Bowman) Foreback. Preceded in death by parents; son, Dean Ray Foreback, in 1971; and brother, Jackie Lynn Foreback. Survived by wife of 60 years, former Shirley P. Ackers, whom he married July 7, 1955. Also survived by sons, Randy L., married to Colleen Blough, Windber, and Ronald A., married to Linda Woodford, Spring Hill, Fla.; daughters, Susan M. Foreback and Jeanette K. Foreback, both of Jerome; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; brothers, Richard, Virginia Beach, Va.; Raymond, Macungie; Robert, Elsie, Mich.; and Thomas, Cincinnati, Ohio. A 1952 graduate of Conemaugh Township High School, Davidsville. Lou was the second son of six boys raised in a two bedroom coal company house in Jerome. He was man who devoted his life to his family and his country. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 1972 as a master sergeant. He was a telecommunications specialist which fed his keen interest in electronics and technology. He served his country at duty stations around the world and in the U.S. such as The Azores, England, Korea, Southeast Asia and Germany. Stateside he served at the Pentagon for two tours and at Strategic Air Command headquarters in Omaha, Neb., for two tours. He was most proud of his three and a half years of service as the Commanding NCO of an Air Force Communications Detachment assigned to the U.S. Army Post in Darmstadt, Germany. Through his career, he earned numerous service ribbons, commendations and unit citations. Mr. Foreback also had a second career with the U.S. Postal Service as a mailhandler from which he retired in 1997 due to health reasons. His declining heath made it more and more difficult to get around but never broke his spirit, fighting his personal battle with heart and lung disease every minute until the end. Mr. Foreback was very proud to have served his country in the Air Force and continued his involvement with veterans groups throughout his post service years with the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Korean War Vets and the VFW were some of the organizations that he devoted his time to. He also was involved with the Retired Enlisted Association and Air Force Association. Mr. Foreback was a longtime member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Johnstown, where a memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016, to honor his life. There will be visitation time with the family to begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by service at 11:30 a.m., Pastor Ray Streets Jr., officiating. There will be no viewing at the request of the family. There will be a dinner given by the church for family and friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation in the name of Louis F. Foreback be made to the American Legion, Post 802, Jerome, or Emmanuel Baptist Church. Arrangements in charge of Hoffman Funeral Homes.
