Shirley M.  Thomas (Peterson)
THOMAS - Shirley M. (Peterson), 82, Boswell, went to be with her Lord and Savior January 7, 2017 at Windber Hospice after a courageous battle with cancer. Born June 11, 1934 in Somerset County. Daughter of Oliver and Mary (Stayrook) Peterson. Preceded in death by parents; husband of 37 years James R. Thomas on November 7, 1997; brother Alfred Peterson; sisters Iona Keim, Ruth Griffiths and Lila Koontz; 2 infant brothers and son-in-law Douglas Harned. Survived by daughter Pattie married to Michael Eger, Jennerstown; beloved granddaughter Amanda Harned, Jennerstown; special sister and caregiver Arbutus Thomas and her companion Brad Brick, Palmetto, FL; sister-in-law Dorothy Peterson, Soap Hollow and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins including special niece and caregiver Marjorie Bittner and husband Brian, Stoystown. A 1953 graduate of Conemaugh Township Area High School. Retired employee of Nancy Carol Garment Factory, Boswell. Member of Unite Here, formerly ILGWU. Attended Sipesville Church of the Brethren. She enjoyed volunteering, playing bingo and socializing with her friends at the Boswell Senior Center and attending Silver Sneakers when she was able. She also enjoyed baking and was known as the “Cookie Lady.” Shirley loved her Lord and her family and reading her Bible, walking and doing her daily crossword puzzles. She was so blessed to have the best neighbors anyone could ask for and made so many good friends through the years. She always offered a kind word and helping hand to all she knew. Shirley’s family would like to thank everyone at Windber Hospice and all her caregivers for the wonderful care she received the last few months. Visitation from 10AM until time of service 2PM Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Sipesville Church of the Brethren, 711 Sipesville Road, Sipesville, PA with Pastor Cecil Lohr presiding. Interment Horner-Mt. Tabor Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements by Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Boswell.
