Comfrey Stanford "Squire"  Ickes, Jr.
ICKES – Comfrey Stanford, Jr. “Squire”, 82, of Boswell, passed from this life on February 5, 2017. Squire was born on September 13, 1934 in Johnstown, son of Comfrey Stanford Ickes, Sr. and Leora M. (Trostle) Ickes. Preceded in death by parents; brothers, Rev. Dr. Chauncey J. Ickes and Wayne Ward Ickes, Sr.; sister Mary Katherine Place and her husband Neil and son-in-law Mark Shockey. He is survived by beloved wife of 60 years, Phyllis Ann (McTonic) Ickes; daughter, Jody Shockey married to John Raszewski, Friedens; sons, Comfrey Scott married to Sharon Stanton, Monroeville; Neil married to Denise Zugaro, Somerset and Christopher married to Marilú Diaz Casañas, Somerset and sister Rose Furman, Taylor, Michigan. He was a devoted grandfather to seven grandchildren: Dustin Shockey married to Tristan Thomas and Jordan Shockey married to Violeta Torregrosa Ayala; Comfrey Spencer Ickes married to Bethany Smarra and Nicole and Sean (children of Scott and Sharon); Philip and Shane, (sons of Neil and Denise Ickes). His five great grandchildren are Aviana Grace and Leiv Jay Shockey (children of Dustin and Tristan); Margarita Lynne (Fuega) Shockey (daughter of Jordan and Violeta); Sophia Mae and Gianna Noelle, (daughters of Spencer and Bethany Ickes). Also survived by brothers-in-law William McTonic and Donald McTonic; sisters-in-law Ruby (Horner) Ickes and Leona (Leasock) Ickes and Patricia (McTonic) Witt and numerous nieces and nephews. Squire’s first job was sweeping floors at the former B & W Hardware at age six. He was a 1952 graduate of Jenner Boswell Joint High School and chairman of his class reunions since 1960. A 1954 graduate of Cambria Rowe Business College. A self-employed insurance agent and accountant since age 21. He was a Northwestern Mutual Life Special Agent from 1957 to 2014 and earned the Million Dollar Round Table designation three times. He served as Justice of the Peace (Magistrate) of Boswell area from 1955 (at age 21) to 1970. Served on the Peoples Bank & Trust Company Board of Directors followed by the advisory board for First Commonwealth and was a member of Somerset State Hospital Board and various other boards. A member of St. Andrews Evangelical Church, Boswell. He enjoyed hosting the Ickes Family Reunions since 1974. Squire joined the Boswell Volunteer Fire Department at age 16 and was recording secretary for 60 years. A founder of Boswell Athletic Sportsmen’s Association, Director of Helping Hands Food Pantry since 1985. He was a member of Boswell Lions Club since 1957, recipient of the Lions Club Melvin Jones award and had perfect attendance for 57 years. He was a member of Jenner Rod & Gun Club, lifetime member of Boswell Area Historical Society, Stoystown Area Historical Society and Conemaugh Township Area Historical Society. He received the Joseph H. Hoffman Memorial Community Service Award from the Boswell JC’s in 1987. He was also a season ticket holder to Pirates, Steelers and Penguins games. He enjoyed traveling and dancing with Phyllis but he never did learn to play the accordion or the piano. Viewing from 6-8PM Tuesday and 2-4 & 6-8PM Wednesday at Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 409 Main Street, Boswell. Viewing also from 10AM until time of service 11AM Thursday at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, Boswell with Rev. Jonathan Adams, Rev. Larry Hoover and Rev. Gary Anderson presiding.
