Christmas Surprise!

Christmas Day 1961 started out with gifts under the tree, but it was not your typical holiday. For one thing, we had company at our Port Charlotte, Florida home! Alfred and Marie Weaver were visiting with their sons, Alan and Bryan. Christmastime in sunny Florida was a definiite departure from the snowy landscape of their home in Roaring Spring, PA.

Then the unthinkable happened. Our toilets overflowed and no amount of work with a plunger or two could remedy the situation. A snake didn't help. So our intrepid dads, Alf and Dean, put on their work overhauls (see the photo) and started digging up the sewer line in our front yard. Even at age 7, I could sense that the men were not pleased to be spending the holiday with shovels in hand. Meanwhile, the turkey was in the oven and the moms, Olive and Marie, were giggling in the kitchen. Fortunately for us kids, the neighbors opened their doors to us throughout the day.

Eventually, Alfred and Dean found and removed the item (which will go unnamed here) that was clogging up the system, but not before getting good and dirty! And not before capturing some attention and good-hearted kidding from the neighbor dads. As it turns out, that was the one and only Christmas that Alf and family came to visit us in FL. That was fine with me, since I always preferred to go to PA for Christmas where the snow was delightful and the toilets were reliable!

I have to say, there was never a better friend than Alfred when the going got tough!
