Life Story for Kathryn M. Orkis (Marchok)

Kathryn M.  Orkis (Marchok)
ORKIS – Kathryn M. “Katie” “Bubba” (Marchok), 98, Maple Ridge, passed away peacefully at her home Dec. 1, 2013. Born Sept. 14, 1915, in Johnstown, daughter of the late Michael and Nastunia (Kardosh) Marchok. (Katie’s mother also passed on Dec. 1, 1951.) Also preceded in death by husband, Frank M. (July 27, 1967); son, Larry (1947); infant daughter, Madeleine (1955); son, Michael (1985); sisters, Mary Tomko and Rose Brittingham; and brothers, Charles and Frank Marchok. Survived by son, Richard, married to Carol (Miles), Claymont, Del.; daughter, Donna J., married to Rickie Shull, Hollsopple; grandchildren, Cheryl (Orkis) Popo, Claymont, Del.; Richard Orkis Jr., and wife, Heather (Davis), Townsend, Del.; Michelle (Orkis) Chapman, Jerome; Michael Shull, Hollsopple; and Melissa (Shull), married to Matthew Reckner, Windber; four great-grandchildren; and friend of more than 70 years, Helen Magazzu, Windber. Katie worked in New York as a housekeeper and nanny until she married Frank. Later, she worked in the Johnnie Jax Sewing Factory in Hollsopple and was a caretaker of her family members for many years. She enjoyed walking in the woods and picking mushrooms, tending to her flower garden, baking, reading, playing the lottery and watching baseball on TV. Katie was the oldest member of St. Anne Catholic Church, Davidsville. Special thanks to Peggy, Liz and Carolyn who helped with her care through Windber Hospice. Viewing will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 109 Church Road, Davidsville, where vigil for the deceased will be held Tuesday afternoon. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anne Catholic Church, the Rev. Father Michael Lewandowski, OFM, Conv., celebrant.
