Life Story for Evelyn F. Avery (Harris)

Evelyn F.  Avery (Harris)
AVERY – Evelyn F. (Harris), 97, formerly of Jenners, died peacefully surrounded by her family April 5, 2014, at The Villa Assisted Living, Johnstown. Born Jan. 31, 1917, in Potomac Manor, W. Va., daughter of Willis and Annie (Silket) Harris. Preceded in death by parents; husband, Lewis A. Sr. “Mike,” on June 24, 1984; infant daughter, Betty; daughter, Nancy Bell; and sons, David and Kenneth. She was the last surviving of 12 siblings. Survived by children, Lewis A. Jr., married to Sandra (Fisher), Providence Forge, Va.; Jackie, married to Samuel Bowlin, Williamsburg, Va.; and Cindy, married to John Bowser, Altoona; 18 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Former member of Jenner Grace Brethren Church, Boswell Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, Sipesville Senior Citizens and Somerset County Historical Society. She was a seamstress for former Dorfman & Hoffman Garment Factory, Boswell, for 20 years and a waitress for the former White Star Hotel, Jennerstown, for 14 years. Evelyn enjoyed cooking for her family, visiting family in Europe and spending 20 winters in Florida, where she had many good friends. She also enjoyed celebrating her birthday at Rizzo’s Restaurant in Windber each of the last seven years. Viewing from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 409 Main St., Boswell, with the Rev Adam Kravets presiding. Interment, Jenner Crossroads Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Evelyn’s memory may be sent to The Mary Grace Foundation, 322 Warren St., Suite 270, Johnstown, Pa. 15905.
