Obituary for Stanley B. Appelgate

APPELGATE – Stanley B., 95, Jerome, formerly of Somerset and Boswell, died April 6, 2017 at Country Manor Living, Jerome. Born November 18, 1921 in Glen Rock, NJ. Son of Joseph and Edith (Munkelt) Appelgate. Preceded in death by parents; wife Deloris E. “Betty” (Harker) Appelgate on April 9, 2006 ending a marriage of 53 years; sisters Edith and her husband David Bilson; Bessie Bell and her husband Frank Elia; brothers Joseph and his wife Fidelia “Linda” and Robert and brother-in-law Eugene Wines. Survived by sons David, Latrobe; Daniel married to Darlene (Mellott) Appelgate, Johnstown; and Nathan married to Karen (Yaste) Appelgate, Stoystown; daughter Priscilla Appelgate, Columbus, OH; sister Helen Wines, Mt. Airy, MD and numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws. A 1940 graduate of Ridgewood High School in New Jersey where he excelled in soccer and baseball and was known as “Ironman Appelgate”. A U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of WWII having served in the China Burma India Theater aka “The Aluminum Highway”. A graduate of the International Bible College, San Antonio, TX and Pentecostal Bible Institute, Tupelo, MS where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology. He enjoyed theological research and was a steel worker for U.S. Steel and Bethlehem Steel for most of his career. Viewing from 1PM until time of service 2PM Monday at Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 409 Main Street, Boswell with Pastor Dale Stotler presiding. Interment Custer Cemetery, Hollsopple with military honors by Somerset County Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, donations in Stanley’s memory may be sent to Country Manor Activity Fund, PO Box 430, Jerome, PA 15937.
