Mildred Melvina "Mel"  Burger (Laughner)
BURGER – Mildred Melvina “Mel” (Laughner), 90, Davidsville, formerly of Riverside, entered into the arms of Jesus on her 90th birthday, Sept. 10, 2014, at Laurel View Village, Davidsville. Born Sept. 10, 1924, in Johnstown, daughter of William B. Laughner and Rose Mildred (Huff) Laughner-King. Preceded in death by parents; stepfather, Bertrand D. King; grandmother, Maude Huff; and sister, Shirley Mae Laughner. Survived by loving husband of 67 years, Clair C. Burger, whom she wed on Aug. 2, 1947; loving son, David Burger, Dayton, Ohio; loving daughter, Debbie, married to Brian Shoff, Johnstown; and precious grandsons, Jeremy Shoff, and special friend, Megan Nonnemaker; and Jesse Shoff, and special friend, Jessica Long. She also enjoyed the company of her special grandpets, Joe and Glen. A graduate of Johnstown High School. Over the years, Mel was employed by Physicians and Dentists Bureau and Crane Co., both of Johnstown, and Johnstown Credit Bureau. Member of the former Riverside Grace Brethren Church, now Davidsville Community Church, where she held various positions over the years, such as church secretary and treasurer. She also helped with Bible school and the Keenagers group. Longtime member of Riverside ladies auxiliary. Mel loved gardening with Clair and freezing and canning the produce Clair raised. She enjoyed sewing and knitting and family vacations out west, to Canada and to Sunset Beach, N.C. Most of all, she loved being a wife, mother and grandmother, caring for and nurturing her family always telling them “I love you and be careful.” She was always serving others in some capacity, that was her greatest joy in life. She will be forever loved and always missed. The family would like to thank Dr. Ellenberger for 30-plus years of wonderful care; Deborah, Stacy and Sue from Interim Hospice; the wonderful nurses and staff at Laurel View Village; and special caretaker, Michelle Plummer. Viewing will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and from noon until time of funeral service at 1 p.m. Sunday at Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 109 Church Road, Davidsville, Pastor H. Don Rough presiding. Interment will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Mount Moriah Cemetery, Portage. Donations in Mel’s memory may be given to Laurel View Village Caring Fund, 2000 Cambridge Drive, Davidsville, Pa. 15928.
