Obituary for Hughes Leroy "Roy" Motley Jr.

Hughes Leroy "Roy" Motley Jr.
MOTLEY – Hughes Leroy “Roy” Jr., 63, Johnstown, died Jan. 12, 2016, at Conemaugh Good Samaritan Hospital, Johnstown of pneumonia resulting from the rare disease Multiple System Atrophy. Born April 21, 1952, in Richmond, Va. Preceded in death by father, Hughes L. Motley Sr.; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Walter “Mo” and Alice Blucas; and the family’s sweet dog, Nora. Survived by mother, Hester (Chatin) Motley, Richmond, Va.; wife and best friend of 30 years, Barbara Ann (Blucas) Motley; and daughters, Caitlin, married to Corey Derr, Atlanta, Ga.; and Abigail “Abby” Motley, Seattle, Wash. Growing up, he equally loved and tortured, and was tortured and loved by his older sisters Carolyn, married to Mike Meacham; and Nancy, married to David Wallace, both of Richmond. He loved catching them in the various booby traps he set up to protect his room from sisterly interference. A 1970 graduate of Douglas Freeman High School in Richmond. Roy earned a degree in computer science and biomedical engineering from the University of South Florida. He began his career at NASA in Florida and later moved to New York City to work for Beckman Coulter before returning to Richmond where he met the love of his life, Barbara Ann Blucas, in 1982. Barb and Roy were married two-and-a-half years later at the beautiful St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Barb’s hometown of Boswell on May 18, 1985. The couple then relocated to New Orleans, La., where Barb gave birth to their two daughters. Roy was a doting father, taking the girls on bike rides along Lake Pontchartrain, teaching them to fly kites two to three times their size, and propping them up on his shoulders at the Mardi Gras parade to get the best chance at catching doubloons and beads. Throughout their childhood, he instilled in his daughters a sense of confident optimism, passion for life, and many lessons – the importance of the Golden Rule, the value of helping others, and even the wise message of the Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” Roy and his family moved to Johnstown during the blizzard of 1993 – a proper welcome back to the north. There he continued a successful career as a talented computer engineer and programmer with Beckman Coulter, but he also was a lifelong learner and had countless hobbies. He built model airplanes, learned to play guitar, maintained an extensive and cutting edge collection of electronics, enjoyed cross country and downhill skiing, mountain biking, and kayaking. He was known for his humor and practical jokes, once convincing daughter, Abby, a pescatarian, that duck is actually considered seafood since they swim in the water. He also was a constant source of wise (and sometimes wise-cracking) proverbs and quotes. Roy would like to especially thank Sherri, Krystal, Jessica and Laura, among others, for their help and support in caring for him. Friends received from 10:30 a.m. until time of celebration of life service at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 109 Church Road, Davidsville. Following the service, a luncheon will be served at Mirage Banquet Hall at the top of the Incline in Johnstown. A private burial will be held at a later date.
